BRAINTREE – As the opening round of the 2022 Pre-Draft Showcase was winding down, Tropics Blue put up a 5-3 win over the Hampton Roads Whalers on the ice at Thayer Academy.
It was a strong first from the Tropics that helped pace the victory, running out to a 4-0 lead through the first 25 minutes. Two from Caris Gillis and one each from Kevin Norwood and Charlie Davis accounted for the advantage.
The cushion was sizeable, but so was the time remaining in the contest. Plenty of time on the clock for the Whalers to battle their way back to within one. A pair of goals from Lode Arts and one from Nathan Mastrony cut it to 4-3.
Clinging to a one-goal advantage, Robbie Young tucked away an empty-netter to help ensure the 5-3 victory for the Tropics.
