Hockey Essentials Reign at Pre-Draft Continues

FOXBORO – It is a refrain that is becoming synonymous with New England Pro-Am Hockey’s Pre-Draft Showcase:

Hockey Essentials takes the title.

For the third straight May, Hockey Essentials has taken the tournament’s trophy home with them. The 2017 installment seeing them defeat the Mavericks, 3-0, on Sunday evening at Foxboro Sports Center.

After posting a 2-1-0 record in the tournament’s preliminary round on Friday and Saturday, Hockey Essentials ran their way to Sunday’s title bout with wins over the Boston Generals (3-1), Canada West Red and White (3-0 and 1-0, respectively), and then a 2-0 win against the NE Nordiques in the semi-finals. Essentials’ Sunday dominance continued into the tournament’s final contest as they carried play throughout.

They carried play throughout, but goals were at a premium thanks to the strong goaltending coming from the Mavericks Andrew Beran. After posting a pair of shutouts en route to the final contest, Beran faced a lot of pressure early, but thwarted all chances. It was not until the just after the game’s midpoint at 16:10 that Essentials broke through for the 1-0 advantage.

That was where the score stayed until late. The Mavericks tried to use their size advantage to take control of the contest, but Hockey Essentials kept up their assault. An insurance goal at 22:47 and an empty netter with just a minute to play sealed the third straight Pre-Draft title for Hockey Essentials, 3-0.

While he took the loss on the score sheet in the end, Beran’s performance in net was still impressive enough to earn him the distinction as the goaltender named to the 2017 Pre-Draft Showcase All-Tournament team.

Joining Beran on the All-Tournament squad were Mavericks teammates Montana Streit and Aaron Grounds, who lined up with Essentials Alex Dominique as the All-Tournament forwards.

The Hockey Essentials tandem of Brandon Tabakin and Nick Petruolo were named as All-Tournament defensemen.

Hockey Essentials’ Matt Cameron took home the tournament’s top individual honor, named as the 2017 Pre-Draft Showcase Most Valuable Player.
